Sleep Apnea Q & A

What is sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), commonly referred to as simply sleep apnea, is a medical condition that causes loud snoring and irregular breathing patterns during sleep. This happens when the soft tissues in the throat are relaxed to the point that they block your airway during sleep, which results in snoring.

With sleep apnea, this blockage can cause you to temporarily stop breathing while you sleep. While these lapses in breath typically last for only a few seconds, they can be dangerous enough to cause choking. People with sleep apnea may also take more shallow breaths during sleep.

Symptoms of sleep apnea may be worse if you’re overweight or if you have large tonsils.

Is snoring the same thing as sleep apnea?

Snoring and sleep apnea can share some of the same symptoms, but they are different conditions. You might snore if you have allergies, a cold, or if you’ve been drinking alcohol.

While OSA is often associated with snoring, not every person who has OSA snores. If you have a snoring problem with other symptoms, such as daytime fatigue, moodiness, or trouble concentrating, then it’s likely you have OSA. Also, if you’ve ever woken up gasping for air, it’s possible OSA is the problem.

If you’re not sure whether you have OSA or just a snoring problem, contact Lombard Dental Studio for a full medical evaluation.

How is sleep apnea treated?

Sleep apnea can be treated with a few key methods. Many patients can reduce their symptoms with positive lifestyle changes, like losing weight or reducing alcohol consumption before bed. If there is an underlying sinus problem that is causing breathing difficulties, addressing this can also resolve symptoms of sleep apnea.

If your symptoms are mild, your dentist might recommend a custom-made mouth guard to wear at night. This helps to improve your jaw position so your airway is open during sleep. In more severe cases, he might suggest surgery or the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which blows air into your lungs to maintain a constant breathing pattern while you sleep.
