Strengthening Weak Enamel

Tooth enamel is the thin outer layer of your tooth. Enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body and covers the part of your teeth that are visible outside of your gums. Enamel is translucent but it is very important for the health of your teeth. Below strong or weak enamel is what is called dentin. This is the part of your tooth that is responsible for the color of your teeth.

The reason your enamel is so important is because it helps protect your teeth from daily use like chewing, biting, and grinding your teeth. It is considered an insulator for the dentin in your tooth as it protects your tooth from painful temperatures and unhealthy chemicals. It also helps your teeth from being chipped or cracked. Keeping your enamel strong and healthy is necessary for healthy teeth. While your enamel cannot regenerate, it can be strengthened. Below you will find some tips for how to address weak enamel.

1. Watch Your Diet

Your enamel can be demineralized by certain foods. Foods that have fermentable carbohydrates can severely damage your enamel. Candy, cookies, bread, crackers, cereal, and soda can all create harmful acids when mixed with the bacteria in your mouth. The process of “demineralization” is used to refer to the breakdown of weak enamel as the acid essentially eats away at it. It’s best to stay away from highly processed, sugary goods as they can be quite harmful. If you end up eating or drinking any of the fermentable carbohydrates mentioned, brush your teeth as soon as possible. The leftover food and drink debris can attach to your teeth and eat away at them in the meantime.

2. Be Proactive

Preventative care is the best option as there is no way to reverse damage to your enamel. Remineralizing agents can help with this. If you consistently use products with mineral fluoride you can help fortify your enamel. Drinking fluoridated water and using topical fluorides can help drastically with weak enamel. Talk with your dentist before using these products as they are well-versed in your unique dental care needs.

3. Oral Care

Focusing on your oral health will not only help your teeth and gums but it will do wonders for your overall health. Establish and maintain a healthy oral care routine. Below you will find steps for how to properly care for your teeth.

Brushing: It’s important to brush in a circular motion for at least two minutes twice a day (morning and night). Brush firmly, but not too hard. Brushing too hard can break down your enamel prematurely. Do not forget your gums and tongue as they can both house harmful bacteria. Talk with your dentist about your toothbrush and make sure the bristles are right for you.

Flossing: Floss at least once a day. If you only floss once, do it before bed. You have been eating all day so getting all of the debris out before you hit the hay can do wonders for your teeth. If you leave any leftover debris in your mouth at night it can cause major issues with your teeth and gums.

Mouthwash: Use mouthwash at least once a day. If you can, try a mouthwash with fluoride. Again, discuss this with your dentist before trying it.

Regular Dental Visits: Depending on your dentist’s advice, go for your regular dental checkups in Thousand Oaks at least every six months.

4. Choose a Healthy Diet

While you should avoid certain foods, you can incorporate other foods to remineralize your teeth. While certain foods speed up enamel damage and eventually tooth decay, others can help strengthen your enamel.   • Whole grains
  • Fruits and vegetables
